A Korean man was arrested for hurling feces at the Japanese embassy last Friday, in response to the observance of “Takeshima Day”.
Japan and South Korea have long been involved in a dispute over a small cluster of rocky islands between the two nations. South Korea, which currently has a weather station and helipad on the islands, calls them “Dokdo”, while the Japanese claim the islands as “Takeshima”.
On Friday when Takeshima Day was being held across Japan, a Korean man identified as Mr. Choi decided to toss his own excrement at the Japanese embassy in Seoul. The feces was contained in a plastic bottle, and Mr. Choi had to scale a wall in order to send his message.
The man was arrested, but released. More disturbingly, he had previously been arrested for the same reason, and in one instance in 2010 had cut off a piece of his finger and mailed it to the embassy.
It should be noted that while many Koreans feel strongly about the Dokdo/Takeshima issue, so far Mr. Choi is the only one who has resorted to such measures.
