Update: You can find a larger collection of Gangnam Style videos and articles here.
For too long I’ve ignored an unavoidable segment of Korean culture: K-Pop.
Possibly because it’s one of the most globally recognized aspects of Korean culture, but also partially because I’m not big into pop music. But when you live in this country it’s an omnipresent soundtrack that is impossible not to be exposed to. K-Pop booms on the streets from storefront speakers, plays on large LCD TVs in convenience stores and buses, generally saturating your brain everywhere you go. And to be honest, it grows on you.
And this video was too good not to share.
Behold, Gangnam Style, the most recent offering from K-Pop veteran Psy (싸이). The video features, among other things, my old neighbourhood of Gangnam, the impossibly sexy girls that live there, fantastically horrible dance sequences, and the familiar sight of a “noraebus“, which is when a tour bus turns on the mandatory karaoke system and transforms into a moving karaoke night club. Believe it or not, almost all tour buses are equipped with this feature.
No doubt Gangnam Style will be stuck in my head for the next six weeks; now I’m hoping it will also be stuck in yours:
