Teaching students in Asia is an amazing experience. They’re intelligent, dedicated, and hard working. Until after lunch time, when you’d think a full moon had just risen.
In the mornings, my students are usually quite tired. But after lunch there is an amazing transformation that lasts for most of the first period after lunch. But their lunches are not packed with sugar, and as far as I know, they aren’t sneaking into the teacher’s lounge for a quick espresso. Maybe someone has been slipping cocaine into the rice cooker. Who knows. But this is my life as a teacher*.
*Neither of these girls are my students, but they’re fairly accurate representations of the stark contrast I see on a daily basis. I’m sure many parents understand too.
