The Story of a Defection: How Hyeonseo Lee Escaped From North Korea

Hyeonseo Lee managed to escape the oppressive and isolated regime of North Korea. Then she went back for her family and did it again.

Hyeonseo LeeSince the borders in and out of Korea were sealed off in 1953, between 100,000-300,000 North Korean citizens have managed to flee the country. This the story of one of them.

Hyeonseo Lee’s story is painful to hear. Her talk given at a TED conference this year is one of the most detailed stories of defection that have been made public.

What makes her story so compelling is not only that she communicates it in English–something that many ex-North Koreans are simply unable to do–but also because you can hear her fight back her emotions with every word. The unfortunate reality of the situation is that many defectors are caught and sent back to North Korea to face labour camps…or even death.

I have a language learning blog, and I have made a couple of Korean alphabet charts. Now I’m giving them away to people who have Korea-related blogs. If you want to post them on your blog, you can just go here and grab them:

I just ask that, if you don’t mind, you put a link back to my page.
